The Law
Credit and store card charges have to be based on what it costs the card company. When someone misses a payment, pays late or goes over their limit it only costs the card provider a few pounds. But they have been charging over £30 a time. This is unlawful profiteering, and it can plunge people further into financial difficulty.
In April 2006 the Office of Fair Trading ruled that credit card companies were overcharging their customers. It said that charges should be no more than £12. Since then most card providers have reduced their charges, but the ruling still applies to charges before April 2006 that were over £12
